ABOUT GLASS ARTIST BOB HOFFMEYER
Lampwork and Fused Glass Pendants, Beads, and Jewelry
At age 65, after a lifelong career in business and many years of appreciating and purchasing glass art, Bob began working with glass himself. He began with a community college class learning the technique of fusing (melting) and slumping (bending) pieces of glass together to make plates, bowls, and pendants. Within weeks, this led to a desire to learn the art of making lampwork beads and he began sharing a studio with the Arroyo Road Bead Collective in Forest Knolls, California. As finished beads and pendants began to pile up, he then studied precious metal jewelry fabrication and wire working and found a mentor to work with him on jewelry design.
Bob says of his new-found passion:
Molten glass has its own organic nature and working with it successfully requires that that nature be honored. If I let it, the glass will guide me in a co-creative process. With some creative expression in mind and sufficient technical skill, I can push the limits. However, for the magic of creation to happen, I must remember that the limits are set by the glass itself.
Sometimes what emerge are expressions of scenes and the infinite color variations of nature. Other times, the pendants and beads seem to reflect aspects of the human experience of life. They can be variously playful, elegant, flamboyant, reserved and, often, ethereal. Whatever else it expresses, always the glass is alive and sensuous to the touch.
Should you choose to purchase one of my creations, I wish you as much joy in wearing it as I experienced in making it.
